Bringing Spoken Grammar into the Classroom
The grammar of natural spoken English is in a number of ways different from much of the grammar that learners are generally taught. Through the brief analysis of an authentic dialogue, this practical session looks at some key features of spoken grammar and explores how we can introduce this into our teaching to help our learners better understand and use it. The session will throughout be illustrated with authentic examples of spoken grammar, including those from spoken-like social media.
Jon Hird is a teacher, teacher trainer and ELT materials writer based in Oxford, UK. He teaches grammar, professional English and EAP at the University of Oxford and frequently gives teacher-training talks and workshops in the UK and overseas. He has written and contributed to a number of ELT publications for a range of ELT publishers, including grammar, course book and other resource material. He is one of the authors of the course book series ‘Language Hub’ by Macmillan Education.
